Venue
The specific court within a jurisdiction where a case should be filed. Even if multiple courts have jurisdiction, venue rules narrow it to the proper geographic location: usually where the defendant lives or where the events happened.
Jurisdiction asks: which court system can hear this? Venue asks: which specific court within that system? In federal court, venue is governed by statute (28 U.S.C. ยง 1391 and others). State systems have their own venue rules.
A case in the wrong venue isn't necessarily dismissed: it's often transferred to the right venue. Defendants who want to challenge venue have to do it early or they waive the objection.
