Remand
When a higher court sends a case back to a lower court for further proceedings. Common after an appellate reversal or vacatur: the appellate court identifies the error and tells the trial court what to do next.
A remand isn't necessarily a do-over of the whole case. The appellate court usually gives specific instructions: "remanded for a new trial," "remanded to consider the issue under the correct legal standard," "remanded with instructions to dismiss." The trial court has to follow those instructions.
A "GVR": grant, vacate, and remand: is a common Supreme Court action where the Court grants review, vacates the lower court's decision, and remands for reconsideration in light of a new ruling, all without a full merits decision.
