Legal aid
Free or low-cost legal services for people who can't afford a lawyer. Most areas have legal aid organizations funded by federal grants, state appropriations, charitable donations, and the private bar.
Legal aid usually focuses on high-need civil cases: eviction defense, domestic violence, public benefits, immigration, consumer issues. Income limits apply (typically 125-200% of the federal poverty level), and even qualifying clients may face long waitlists due to underfunding.
If you need a lawyer and can't afford one, contact your local legal aid organization first. Even if they can't take your case, they can often refer you to other resources, pro bono panels, or limited-scope attorneys who'll take just part of the case at a reduced rate.
